Background: The activity of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis (HPA) during inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) treatment of asthma has been studied extensively. To date patient populations have been too small or homogeneous to identify relationships between steroid exposure, patient characteristics and HPA activity.
